Naftogaz to seek compensation if Russian gas transit stops in 2020

KIEV, Jul 5 (PRIME) -- Energy holding Naftogaz Ukrainy will seek compensation in international court if Russian gas transit through the Ukrainian territory is halted from 2020, Executive Director Yury Vitrenko said on his Facebook page on Friday.

Kiev is interested in keeping Russian gas transit through its territory, but on transparent terms and with respect to the European legislation, he said.

“We will continue to take a constructive position that is consolidated with Europe at talks to prolong transit. We want transit,” Vitrenko said.

If there is no transit due to the “political position” of Russia, “we will demand compensation in international court,” he said.

“We have enough legal grounds to do it,” he added.

The current supply and transit contracts between Russia and Ukraine expire at the end of 2019. The parties have not yet reached consensus on the fate of the contracts. Vice President of the European Commission for Energy Union Maros Sefcovic said earlier that the gas negotiations between Ukraine, Russia and the E.U. will resume in September.
